Lugia (From Pokemon Go Official Blog)

From Monday, August 4, to Monday, August 11, 2025, the Legendary Pokémon Lugia is soaring back into Pokémon GO 5-star Raids! As a Psychic/Flying type, Lugia is known for its incredible bulk and formidable moves, making it a challenging and rewarding raid boss. To ensure you're fully prepared to conquer this raid and catch a perfect Lugia, here's everything you need to know.

Lugia Raid Battle Overview

Lugia appears as a 5-star Raid Boss. Its dual Psychic/Flying typing, combined with its exceptionally high defense, means battles can be a war of attrition.

  • Type: Psychic / Flying
  • Weaknesses: Rock, Ghost, Electric, Ice, Dark
  • Resistances: Fighting, Psychic, Grass, Ground (supereffective against)
  • Raid Boss CP: 45,925 CP

To break through Lugia's high defense, you'll need to hit its weaknesses hard. Rock-type Pokémon are especially effective, as they not only deal supereffective damage but also resist Lugia's Flying-type attacks.

Best CP for a Perfect Lugia (100% IVs)

After defeating Lugia, you'll get a chance to catch it. To know if you've found a perfect (100% IV) one, check the CP.

  • Without Weather Boost: CP 2115 (15/15/15 IVs at Level 20)
  • With Weather Boost (Windy): CP 2645 (15/15/15 IVs at Level 25)

Lugia receives a weather boost in Windy conditions. Raiding during this weather will give you a chance to catch a Level 25 Lugia, saving you valuable Stardust on power-ups.

Top Pokémon Counters for Lugia Raids (By Trainer Level)

To efficiently take down Lugia, you'll need to use the best counters for your trainer level. Here are our recommendations based on trainer level and available Pokémon.

1. Recommended for Level 30 Trainers

At this level, you might not have a full team of maxed-out Legendary or Shadow Pokémon. Focus on readily available Pokémon that still pack a punch.

  • Rampardos (Rock): Smack Down / Rock Slide - An excellent Rock-type attacker with high DPS that's relatively easy to obtain.
  • Rhyperior (Ground/Rock): Smack Down / Rock Wrecker (Legacy Move) or Smack Down / Stone Edge - A durable Rock-type attacker with good bulk and damage.
  • Tyranitar (Rock/Dark): Smack Down / Stone Edge - A solid Rock-type attacker that can also use Dark-type moves to exploit Lugia's Psychic weakness.
  • Chandelure (Ghost/Fire): Hex / Shadow Ball - A top-tier Ghost-type attacker that deals consistent damage.
  • Electivire (Electric): Thunder Shock / Wild Charge - Exploits Lugia's Flying-type weakness with powerful Electric attacks.

2. Recommended for Level 40 Trainers

At this level, you likely have access to and have powered up some Legendary and Shadow Pokémon. You can start building a more specialized team.

  • Shadow Rampardos (Rock): Smack Down / Rock Slide - The Shadow bonus turns Rampardos into an absolute beast, dealing incredible damage.
  • Shadow Tyranitar (Rock/Dark): Smack Down / Stone Edge - A dual-threat that hits both the Rock and Dark weaknesses effectively with its Shadow boost.
  • Zekrom (Dragon/Electric): Charge Beam / Wild Charge - A powerful Electric-type Legendary that is one of the best counters against Lugia.
  • Darkrai (Dark): Snarl / Dark Pulse - This Mythical Pokémon's Dark-type attacks are highly effective against Lugia.
  • Mewtwo (Psychic): Psycho Cut / Shadow Ball (Legacy Move) - If you have a Mewtwo with the Legacy move Shadow Ball, it's one of the best Ghost-type counters you can use.

3. Recommended for Level 50 (Maxed) Trainers

For max-level trainers, the goal is to use the absolute best Pokémon to defeat the raid with minimal players. Mega Evolutions are highly recommended.

  • Mega Gengar (Ghost/Poison): Shadow Claw / Shadow Ball - The best Ghost-type attacker. Its Mega Evolution boosts the Ghost-type attacks of your entire party.
  • Mega Tyranitar (Rock/Dark): Smack Down / Stone Edge or Bite / Brutal Swing - This Mega Evolution boosts both Rock and Dark-type attacks, making it the perfect counter to exploit both of Lugia's weaknesses.
  • Mega Manectric (Electric): Thunder Shock / Wild Charge - Boosts Electric-type damage for your whole team while hitting hard with its own powerful attacks.
  • Shadow Mamoswine (Ice/Ground): Powder Snow / Avalanche - Its Shadow bonus and Ice-type attacks deal massive damage to Lugia.
  • Zekrom (Dragon/Electric): Charge Beam / Wild Charge - A maxed-out Zekrom is one of the most efficient Electric-type attackers for this raid.
  • Shadow Weavile (Dark/Ice): Snarl / Avalanche or Snarl / Foul Play - A fantastic Shadow Pokémon that can hit Lugia's Dark or Ice weaknesses with incredible power.

Additional Tips for Lugia Raids

  • Minimum Trainers: Due to Lugia's high defense, you'll need at least 4-5 skilled trainers to defeat it comfortably. For less experienced teams, it's safer to have 6 or more.
  • Utilize Weather Boosts: Raiding during Windy weather can help you catch a higher-level Lugia, but remember that its Psychic/Flying moves will also be boosted.
  • Friendship Bonus: Raiding with your Best Friends gives you an attack bonus, helping you clear the raid faster.
  • Power Up & TM Your Pokémon: Before starting the raid, ensure your chosen Pokémon are powered up as much as possible and have the best Fast and Charged Attacks using TMs.
